A planetary day begins at sunrise, not midnight. Its first hour is ruled by the planet of that weekday. The planets then repeat in the order Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon.
Daylight is divided into 12 equal hours, and the night into another 12. Their lengths change with the seasons and your location. Before sunrise, you are still in the previous planetary day.
Sunrise and sunset are calculated estimates for a level horizon. Mountains and local conditions can shift the sunrise you see. If the sun does not rise or set, this system cannot produce a normal 24-hour schedule.
Planetary prayer has roots in medieval and Renaissance ritual magic. The Greek Hygromanteia includes prayers for the seven planets; the Heptameron connects prayers and angelic invocations with planetary days and hours.
The prayers below are my own contemporary expressions of this practice.
O Radiant One, Heart of the Living Cosmos, whose light threads through redwoods and rivers alike, whose gold speaks courage into the marrow of all beings. Light that stands at the center yet imposes no circumference, infuse my soul-field with right seeing, clean intention, and the warmth that lets all things grow. Let my actions today be branches that offer shelter, and let the Light walk with me. Amen.
O Gentle Traveler of Tides and Dreams, whose silver motions soften the edges of the world, whose pull remembers the waters before memory. Let the soul-body breathe as one, let intuition move like mist through the forest of thought. Teach me to receive, to notice, to yield without surrendering myself, and may peace pool around my steps. Amen
O Flame of Necessary Strength, Red Star of honest conflict and righteous courage, guardian of boundaries, breaker of stale patterns. Turn my anger into alignment, my fear into firm steps, my wounds into doorways of deeper compassion. Let my actions be sharp only in truth, tender only in justice, and let my courage be clean. Amen
O Swift One who runs through thought and word, Messenger between worlds, Pattern-Weaver of the hidden grammar of Being. Let my thinking be supple, my listening be honest, my tongue serve truth as leaf serves the tree. Guide my hands in craft, my mind in discernment, that I may walk wisely among the spirits of the day. Amen, and may clarity be my companion.
O Great Benefic, Keeper of the Expansive Good, whose breath opens the canopy of the cosmic forest, whose generosity is the deep law of growing things. Increase my wisdom, that it may be rooted. Increase my prosperity, that it may be shared. Let my presence enlarge the goodness in others, and let abundance flow in right measure. Amen
O Bright Star of Union and the Sweetness of Being, whose emerald fire knits soul to soul, whose fragrance moves through longing toward wholeness. Let my relationships be vessels of grace. Teach me to behold beauty without grasping it, to offer affection without losing myself, to seek harmony without abandoning truth, and let love make me whole. Amen.
O Ancient One, Keeper of Boundaries and Time, whose rings mark the slow truth of things, whose shadow teaches gravity, endurance, and honesty. Help me release what is no longer mine to carry. Teach me the holy weight of responsibility and the holy freedom of limits. Let discipline become devotion, and patience become a doorway to peace, and let wisdom ripen in its season. Amen
You’re invited to write your own planetary prayers. Begin with a quality you associate with the planet, speak in language that fits your beliefs, and name how you want that quality to move through your life. A few sincere lines are enough.
